Live music returned to Coventry Building Society Arena as The Specials took to the stage for a spectacular homecoming concert on Saturday.
Around 5,000 fans headed to the venue’s indoor arena to see the iconic 2 Tone and ska outfit perform classic tracks and songs from their latest studio album, Encore.
The performance came almost a decade after the band played Coventry Building Society Arena during their first comeback tour.
It marked the return of live music for the first time since the pandemic and saw The Specials return to the Arena after a starring supporting slot at the Rolling Stones concert in June 2018.
This time, music-goers were treated to a support performance by Pete Williams, known for his work with Dexys Midnight Runners, The Bureau and These Tender Virtues.
Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter took to the stage to a rousing reception, with fans enjoying iconic tracks including A Message To You Rudy, Ghost Town and Too Much Too Young.
The Specials also played tunes from their forthcoming new album ‘Protest Songs – 1924-2012’ which will be released on Friday, October 1.
Paul Michael, Commercial Director at Coventry Building Society Arena, said: “It was a huge moment to see live music return to the indoor arena for the first time in more than two years.
“The atmosphere was electric and you could see how much it meant to fans in attendance to finally get the chance to sing and dance together again after the last 18 months.
“The Specials have played a significant role in Coventry’s music and cultural heritage and for them to perform in the city in the same year that we celebrate being UK City of Culture is very fitting.
“Our indoor arena has recently undergone a major refurbishment project and it was fantastic to see it being used to its full potential for this event.
“We would like to thank those that attended on the evening for following our guidance to keep everyone safe and help fellow fans to feel safe while attending the concert.”
