Chart-topping Jamaican rapper Sean Paul is coming to Coventry this summer

The Temperature star is playing in the Ricoh Arena’s Ericsson Indoor Arena on Sunday, August 19 and will be supported by BBC Radio 1 DJ Charlie Sloth, with two special guest acts to be announced.

Sean Paul shot to fame in the UK in 2003 with a flurry of Top 40 hits such as Gimme The Light and Get Busy, before hitting the number one spot with Breathe – a collaboration with Blu Cantrell that stayed at the top of the charts for a month.

Since then his presence within the music industry has grown – amassing 25 Top 40 hits in the UK Official Charts - thanks to his ability to work with international stars such Beyoncé, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj.

More recent hits include No Lie with Dua Lipa and Mad Love with David Guetta and Becky G.

Dan Nelmes from Coventry-based Showtime Live and Ben Hathaway from BHP Global played key roles in bringing Sean Paul to the city.

“This is a real coup for the Coventry and Warwickshire area, as it is a rare chance to see Sean Paul perform here in the West Midlands,” said Dan.

“He is one of the world’s best-known rappers who can mould his talent to just about any musical genre, which is why he has been able to stand the test of time and appeal to so many people.

“We are still confirming the support acts with two other well-known names set to join Charlie Sloth.”

Showtime Live are also behind the StepBack 80s and 90s concerts that are also being played in the Ericsson Indoor Arena later this year.

Dan added: “We’ve had an unbelievable response to the StepBack concerts after packing 8,000 people into the Ericsson Indoor Arena last year, and it’s looking like there will be a repeat of that this year too, but we aren’t just about one or two eras.

“We have some big plans for a variety of live music in Coventry over the coming years to help with the countdown to Coventry becoming UK City of Culture. Sean Paul is just the start.”

Justine Hewitt, head of operations at the Ricoh Arena, commented: “We’re really excited to have Sean Paul and Charlie Sloth performing at the Ricoh Arena.

“The flexibility of our venue means we can attract a variety of music acts to the region– whether it’s an intimate gig for several thousand people in the indoor arena, or a stadium bowl holding nearly 40,000 people.

“The Ericsson Indoor Arena has produced some memorable nights and electric atmospheres, and we’re looking forward to ending the summer with a show to remember.”
