Ricoh Arena in line to host Champions Cup semi-final
Date: 14 Mar 2019
Coventry is in line for a major economic windfall with a major European sporting event set to be staged at Ricoh Arena - if results go the venue’s way.
The stadium, which already plays host to Wasps Rugby and Coventry City Football Club matches, will provide home advantage for Saracens in the Heineken Champions Cup semi-final if they can win their quarter-final match against Glasgow Warriors on Saturday 30 March.
That would then provide the Gallagher Premiership champions with a Heineken Champions Cup semi-final tie at Ricoh Arena against either Edinburgh Rugby or Munster Rugby on either Saturday 20 April or Sunday 21 April.
The Heineken Champions Cup sees Europe’s top rugby sides battle for the biggest trophy on the club rugby stage, with a number of international stars set to grace Ricoh Arena’s turf to play out one of the biggest fixtures of the 2018/19 campaign.
Wasps Managing Director Stuart Cain said: “With this year marking Coventry’s year as the European City of Sport, it’s yet another fantastic advert for the city to be able to host another high-profile event at Ricoh Arena.
“It’s a tie that will put Coventry on the international stage, and will also attract more visitors into the city which will in turn boost the local economy with people using hotels and restaurants.
“The Heineken Champions Cup semi-finals tend to boast some of the continent’s biggest rugby names, and we’re crossing our fingers that Saracens can come out on top against Glasgow Warriors to set up an early Easter treat for the region’s rugby supporters.
“With plenty of rugby and football being played throughout the year and the concerts and live entertainment we have on show this summer, 2019 is gearing up to be one of the most successful years in Ricoh Arena’s history.”
Ticket details will be announced in the near future.
